Rosacea
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is an inflammatory disorder of the skin. Irritations
such as the sun, alcohol, spicy foods or extreme changes in temperature
can cause rosacea to flair up and become uncomfortable. Depending on the grade of rosacea (there are four grades of rosacea... Grades 1-4, four being the worst and most disfiguring) indicate how long and severe the flair ups occur.
How do I know if I have rosacea?
People react differently to rosacea. Some may be more sensitive than others. Yvette Terrie with health.usnews.com explains it in the following subtypes:
- Subtype 1: Persistent facial redness and flushing occurs.
- Subtype 2: Persistent redness, bumps, pimples and raised patches become visible across the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead.
- Subtype 3: Thickening of the skin occurs, especially around the nose.
- Subtype 4: The eyelids become swollen and inflamed. Eyes may appear bloodshot or irritated, and may present with a burning or stinging sensation.
What can be done?
Your best friend is sunscreen! Professional care and assessment can put you on the right home care protocol and assist in controlling rosacea. Grades 3 and 4 really need to be under doctor supervision. This skin disorder can progress with age or extreme environments. As mentioned above it can become disfiguring or even spread to the eyes (ocular rosacea).
Use only non-irritating and hypoallergenic cleansers, lotions, and makeup. Use a soft and gentle touch when applying anything to the affected area.
If you believe that you may have rosacea, visit with your dermatologist or local skin care professional. Early treatment can keep symptoms at bay!
